چکیده

This article analyses employment and wage change patterns in India for a period spanning almost three decades, 1983 to 2011. Using data from the National Sample Survey Organisation, this study finds evidence of job polarisation (employment growth in lowand high-skill jobs, and reduction in the middle) in urban India during the 1990s and 2000s. However, the 1980s experienced an employment upgrading. The wage change patterns are almost consistent with the employment change patterns. A reduction in employment share in routine task intensive occupations was found which is consistent with the job polarisation literature. It is argued that the reduction in employment share in the middle skill routine occupations is a result of mechanisation and technological upgradation within the Indian industry. On the other hand, increase in employment in both low-skill and high-skill occupations is more of a result of growing self-employment in informal sector in urban India.

Has the Canadian Labour Market Polarized?

We use Census and Labour Force Survey (LFS) data for the period from 1971 to 2012 to investigate whether the Canadian wage and employment structures have polarized, that is, whether wages and employment have grown more in high and low than in middle paying occupations. We find that there has been faster growth in employment in both high and low paying occupations than those in the middle since ...

Trade Liberalization and Intergenerational Occupational Mobility in Urban India∗

In this paper, we make two novel contributions to the literature on trade and inequality. First, we show that the same mechanism that causes greater cross-sectional inequality, higher relative demand for skill, also facilitates intergenerational occupational mobility. In particular, we develop a stylized model that shows that the innovation induced by international trade causes an increase in t...

The Effects of the State Sector on Wage Inequality in Urban China: 1988–2007 This paper examines the effects of state sector domination on wage inequality in urban China. Using Chinese Household Income Project surveys, we conduct two exercises: with quantile regression analysis, we identify wage gaps across the distribution and over time; and we employ the Machado and Mata (2005) decomposition ...

The Polarization of the U.S. Labor Market

Much research (surveyed in Katz and Autor, 1999) documents a substantial widening of the U.S. wage structure since the late 1970s, driven by increases in educational wage differentials and residual wage inequality. The growth in wage inequality was most rapid during the 1980s, and involved a spreading out of the entire wage distribution. Rapid secular growth in the demand for skills, partly fro...
